Growth & Doppler Scan

Welcome to AVA Clinics and Fetal Centre, where our top priority is the health and well-being of both you and your baby. Our Fetal Growth Scan is a vital tool used to monitor your baby’s growth and development throughout pregnancy, ensuring they are on the right track for a healthy birth.

What is a Growth & Doppler Scan

A Fetal Growth Scan, also known as an ultrasound or growth scan, is a specialized imaging technique used to evaluate the size, development, and overall well-being of your baby in the womb. This scan is typically conducted during the second trimester but can be scheduled as needed based on your doctor’s recommendations.

Why is it Important?

  1. Growth Monitoring: The scan measures your baby’s growth parameters, such as head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length. This helps in identifying any potential growth restrictions or abnormalities early on.
  2. Assessment of Amniotic Fluid: It evaluates the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding your baby, which is crucial for their development and comfort.
  3. Placental Position: The scan assesses the position and function of the placenta, ensuring it’s supporting your baby adequately.
  4. Detection of Abnormalities: Any potential issues such as intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) or other anomalies can be detected and managed proactively.
  5. Fetal and maternal Doppler : to assess blood flow to mother and the baby in addition to assessing overall health of the baby

What to Expect During the Scan

When you come in for your Fetal Growth Scan, you will be comfortably positioned, and a gel will be applied to your abdomen to help transmit the ultrasound waves. A transducer will then be moved across your belly to capture images of your baby. The procedure is non-invasive and generally takes around 20 to 30 minutes.

Typically, a Fetal Growth Scan is performed 26 weeks to term of pregnancy. However, if there are concerns about your baby's growth or if you have specific risk factors, your doctor might recommend additional scans.
